Some of us, sadly, have already had our holiday – the hills of Umbria now seem a long way off www.italiantourism.com. Currently, others are away enjoying the heady delights of outdoor pursuits – plastered in midge repellent www.highland-midge.co.uk – somewhere beyond Oban www.visitscotland.com. A certain peace and emptiness descends over life in August. Life slows and bides it’s time. This is a month which respects and nurtures the humanity of everyone’s need for a break. Ring any business now and there’s a sense of holiday on the air. Meantime, the trusted automated email response gives a wholesome declaration that recipients are away.

The technology of our age increasingly removes us from any sense of the thought and skill required to satisfy our needs. Good design takes care of ‘the bigger picture’ and makes light of it. Ultimately, with technology now so accessible we are all less respectful of the thought and skill behind any design project. We are all ‘push button’ and impatient. Thought and skill needs to recuperate and holidays allow for a little re-evaluation. Come September, the designer will be full of fresh inspiration, the client will value it and allow for the time it takes, and everyone will be full of so many good ideas!
In the meantime, why not create some employment for the postman and enjoy being retro chic – send some traditional holiday postcards. Give thanks for the technology at our fingertips, despite the fact that it makes us less patient! Give thanks for the speed, excitement and efficiency of the age we live in. Most of all give thanks, for those lovely places where mobile signals are impossible, Wi-Fi is almost unknown and holidays, sheer heaven! www.visitthanet.co.uk

Katie is a business development director. She still wonders what she’ll be when she grows up but has always had a keen eye for design and a way with words.
