Giffords circus is poetic, touching, funny, original, and wonderfully encapsulates the magic of all that is most entrancing about a traveling show. There is something compelling about people who choose to travel the hot white dusty road and live on the outside of our everyday world. Their non-conformist ways inspire admiration in our conventional hearts. www.giffordscircus.com

Beneath the Gifford tent awnings, the ring is intimate. This allows the audience to feel completely enveloped for a few very special circus hours. The success of Gifford is in it’s every detail, the colours and textures, the witty references, the skill of the performers, the thrill of the live act, the panache of their costumes and the pathos of their humanity. The music carries you high, as each performer swiftly moves between multiple roles. The performance is played out in front of you on two levels, the circus show and, in addition, the very act of putting on the performance.
Not one sad animal in sight. A few beautiful horses, a fabulous bird or two, an endearing dog – Giffords has such sophistication and innocence. It entertains the adult and child equally. It echoes with childhood memories of summer afternoons when hours were happily spent putting on a show in the garden, and attempting to teach the old dog new tricks. Each act is brilliantly balanced with the other. Watching, you are carried on waves of laughter and merriment between each moment of fantastic skill. Every emotion is played out. Each performance is pure theatre.
As evening falls, it is hard to leave after the showground and break the spell that has been cast. Hooray for all who join the circus and follow their dreams … Those dreams to walk the high wire, clown, horse train, mime, juggle and play six (yes, six) recorders at once! May there always be those in life with passion enough to buck the trend and follow their heart.
